Resistance is Possible

After more than 10 days of detention, lies, struggle and violent repression, M. is finally free.

M., who built a life for himself in Austria, is leading a fight against the authorities, who took away his recently born child. For the last two weeks, he was to be deported to Norway.

Although he only spent a few days there and has his friends and family in Austria, the cops arrested him and booked the flights. M. didn’t want this to happen.

He resisted, determined to be with his family and to fight for his child. Already inside the plane, he declared, that he didn’t want to fly. Successfully: The pilot decided to fly without M. But this was only the beginning.

The cops didn’t stop. They planned another deportation attempt, a week later. They told M, that this time, they would bring him to Norway, no matter what. The time between the first and the second attempt, M. had to spend isolated in detention.

Thanks to the strong support of his friends and family, several lawyers and the media caught on. They tried their best to make this deportations impossible. Time was of the issue, the cops had but a couple of days left until the deadline for the Dublin-deportation would be over.

They tried again. For the second attempt, M. was dragged into the airplane with brute force, in plain sight of the other passengers, who didn’t care to intervene. Even inside the plane, M. screamed for his life, but cuffed and surrounded by four cops, who tried to hide him behind a curtain, he stood little chance.

Soon, the crew told the passengers, that they could move to the empty seats further to the front of the plane, in order not to hear the screams. One passenger didn’t play along. The person resisted and refused to sit down before M. would leave the plane.

This started a whole show of lies. Both the crew and the cops, who had been talking to each other beforehand, invented stories of a terrible criminal record and of M. being a rapist. In order to break any possible solidarity of other passengers, they also said that he had no family here and that he had asylum in Norway. Although other passengers didn’t even dare intervene beforehand, these blatant lies further increased their hostility. They verbally attacked the resistant passenger until the person was dragged out of the plane by the cops. Neither the cops, nor the crew allowed that person to speak to the pilot.

With M. still in the plane, everything seemed lost. But he didn’t give up. Likely influenced by the unusual circumstances, the pilot refused to transport him on the flight. A measure that is usually only taken, when a person represents a risk for other passengers, when a person strongly resists.

The cops went furious. They brutally beat M. up and threatened to deport him the same evening, his relatives, whom he was able to contact after the second failed attempt, reported. Friends and family set everything in motion to stop the third attempt. People from all around Vienna confronted the Austrian Airlines with the situation. The airline that conducts countless deportations whilst saying that they are always on the side of humanity. Despite the presence of more than 30 heavily armed cops, that tried to hinder every attempt, activists distributed flyers at the airport, asking passengers to resist against this inhuman, violent practice. In the plane, a womyn with two children refused to fly under these circumstances.

With success. The next morning, M. was free. The cops gave up. After an extremely strenuous time of violence, threats, lies and strong acts of resistance, the deportation was stopped. For M., this is just the beginning of a long fight. But it’s a beginning that shows: Resistance is possible.

Widerstand ist möglich

Nach mehr als 10 Tagen Schubhaft, Lügen, Kampf und gewaltvoller Repression ist M. endlich frei.

M., der sich in Österreich sein Leben aufgebaut hat und einen Kampf gegen die hiesigen Behörden führt, die ihm das kürzlich geborene Kind wegnahmen, sollte nach Norwegen abgeschoben werden.

Obwohl er nur wenige Tage dort verbracht hat und Freund*innen und Familie in Österreich hat, nahmen ihn die Cops fest und buchten die Flüge. M., war dagegen.

Er leistete Widerstand. Entschlossen, mit seiner Familie zu sein und für sein Kind zu kämpfen, verhinderte er seine eigene Abschiebung. Noch bevor das Flugzeug abhob, erklärte er, dass er nicht fliegen will. Erfolgreich: Der Pilot entschied sich, ohne M. zu fliegen. Doch das war nur der Anfang.

Die Cops hörten nicht auf. Sie planten für die darauf folgende Woche einen weiteren Abschiebeversuch. Sie erklärten M., dass sie ihn diesmal auf jeden Fall nach Norwegen bringen würden. Die Zeit zwischen dem ersten und dem zweiten Abschiebeversuch, verbrachte er isoliert in Schubhaft.

Dank der starken Unterstützung von Freund*innen und Familie wurden auch Anwält*innen und Medien auf die Sache aufmerksam. Sie versuchten ihr Bestes, um die Abschiebung zu verhinden. Zeit spielte eine Rolle: Die Cops hatten nur wenige Tage übrig, bis die Frist für die Dublin-Abschiebung vorüber war.

Sie versuchten es wieder. Bei diesem zweiten Versuch wurde M. mit reiner Gewalt ins Flugzeug gezerrt, unter direkter Beobachtung der anderen Passagier*innen, die es nicht kümmerte, einzuschreiten. Auch im Flugzeug schrie M. noch um sein Leben. Doch gefesselt und umzingelt von vier Cops, die versuchten ihn hinter einem Vorhang zu verstecken, waren seine Chancen marginal.

Schon bald teilte die Crew den Passagier*innen mit, dass sie sich auf die freien Sitze weiter vorne im Flugzeug setzen könnten, um die Schreie nicht zu hören. Eine Person spielte nicht mit. Sie widersetzte sich und weigerte sich zu sitzen bevor M. das Flugzeug verlassen könnte.

Dies initiierte eine ganze Show von Lügen. Sowohl die Crew als auch die Cops, die sich vorher bereits abgesprochen hatten, erfanden Geschichten eines schrecklichen Strafregisters und erklärten, M. sei ein Vergewaltiger. Um jede mögliche Solidarität seitens der Passagier*innen zu brechen, erzählten sie außerdem, dass er hier gar keine Familie habe und in Norwegen Asyl hätte. Obwohl die anderen Passagier*innen schon vorher nicht einschreiten wollten, vergrößerten diese unverhohlenen Lügen nur ihre Feindseligkeit. Sie griffen die widerständige Person verbal an, bis diese von den Cops aus dem Flugzeug gezerrt wurde. Weder die Cops, noch die Crew erlaubten ihr, mit dem Piloten zu sprechen.

M. war immer noch im Flugzeug und alles schien verloren. Doch er gab nicht auf. Wahrscheinlich beeinflusst von den unüblichen Umständen, weigerte sich der Pilot, ihn zu transportieren. Eine Maßnahme, die üblicherweise nur getroffen wird, wenn eine Person ein Risiko für andere Passagier*innen darstellt, starken Widerstand leistet.

Die Cops wurden wütend. Sie schlugen M. brutal zusammen und drohten, ihn noch am selben Abend abzuschieben, erzählten seine Verwandten, zu denen er nach dem verhinderten Abschiebeversuch Kontakt aufnehmen konnte. Freund*innen und Familie setzten alles in Bewegung, um auch den dritten Versuch zu verhindern. Menschen aus ganz Wien konfrontierten die Austrian Airliens mit der Situation. Die Fluglinie, die zahllose Abschiebungen durchführt und gleichzeitig betont, immer auf der Seite der Menschlichkeit zu stehen. Trotz der Präsenz von mehr als 30 schwer bewaffneten Cops, die jeden Versuch verhindern wollten, verteilten Aktivist*innen Flyer am Flughafen. Sie fordertern Passagier*innen auf, sich dieser gewaltvollen, unmenschlichen Praxis zu widersetzen. Im Flugzeug weigerte sich eine Frau mit zwei Kindern, unter diesem Umständen zu fliegen.

Mit Erfolg. Am nächsten Morgen war M. frei. Die Cops hatten aufgegeben. Nach einer extrem anstrengenden Zeit der Gewalt, Drohungen, Lügen und starkem Widerstand, war die Abschiebung verhindert. Für M. ist das erst der Beginn eines langen Kampfes. Doch es ist ein Beginn der zeigt: Widerstand ist möglich.
